Matthew recently joined our lineup of font designers, so we wanted to take a minute to introduce him to everyone.
Name: Matthew Wahl
Website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/secondscout/
Short explanation of what you do or who you are, one or two sentences: I’m art director at a young, non-profit church-planting ministry called Sovereign Grace, and I freelance as well. I’ve also been designing type the last couple years.

Color: 95% Magenta / 15% Yellow
Music: Recently I’ve been on a Shoegaze kick, and especially been loving Ride.
Book: The Good Book: I had never taken time to read it until recent years and it’s shaped me in huge ways to say the least. Also, 8vo: On the outside, and How To Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul.
Designers: 8vo, Bibliotheque, Wim Crouwel, Experimental Jetset, Joseph Müller-Brockman, Non-Format, Paul Rand, Peter Saville, and a my good friend, Michael Dyer (remakedesign.com), are all super influential to me. Plus other ones.
Animal: House cat, LOL!

Website: My favorite website right now is giveugandawater.org
Shape: The golden rectangle (I hate American stationery sizes).
Artist: Clyfford Still
Typeface: Akzidenz Grotesk. It’s difficult to typeset well, but when done right it’s the best.

Movie: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is an old favorite.
Season: Autumn
Favorite Places: NY, LA, San Diego, India.
Guilty Pleasure: Food Network channel. There, I said it.
Distraction: Sunny days

Love: I love discovering the layers of thought that good designers put into their work.
Hate: I hate getting stuck in ruts and not growing as a designer.
What are you working on right now? At my 9-5 I’m starting conference designs for 2010 as well as assessing our own branding. For freelance, I’m working on a couple website layouts and an identity redesign for a Christian think tank in DC.

What career would you switch to if you had to stop your current profession? Something that would give me the excuse to buy a Leica M9 rangefinder camera and travel.
