Gizmodo has an interesting article on the history of Sony Adverts. It seems they have an issue with Sony ads not making sense, but since when did ‘making sense’ matter in the world of successful advertising?

Gavin

For the past five weeks, our in-house designer Jackkrit Anantakul has been sketching, scanning and designing his latest font (handset) design, entitled Gavin. When all was said and done, the concept sketches had over 1100 letter designs, from which we narrowed down two versions, Gavin and Gavin Alt. Each of these two styles contains over 400 diverse, hand-drawn letters. To celebrate Gavin’s release we created a promotional pdf to showcase possible designs using Gavin. Gavin is extremely fun to design with, and we hope you enjoy reading this complimentary pdf as much as we enjoyed designing it.

Need

This calendar design is our most recent collaboration with our friends at Need Supply. For this project we were happy to consult them to use Olivier Gourvat’s Sofia, which turned out really nice. They also worked with illustrator Emerald Grippa for the wonderful front side illustration. Copies can be gotten by stopping by their retail location in Richmond, VA.

We all know Haiti is having a really bad time right now and most people want to do something to help out in some way or another. Being as most of us are graphic designers, Font Aid IV is a great project that we all could easily lend a few minutes to help out with. Time is short, but see if you can lend a few minutes to send them a ampersand design for the font.

Details
Font Aid IV: Coming Together, a Collaborative Typeface

The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) is announcing the launch of Font Aid IV, a project uniting the typographic and design communities in raising funds to expedite relief efforts in Haiti. Everyone is encouraged to help the cause by spreading the word to friends and colleagues.

Type designers, graphic designers and other artists from around the world are invited to contribute artwork to be included in a typeface created exclusively for the Font Aid IV effort. The theme of Font Aid IV is “Coming Together” which we will represented though a font consisting entirely of ampersands. Coming Together will be made available for sale, with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders. SOTA, a US-based non-profit, is acting as a non-partisan organizing body to help coordinate the effort and ensure all funds are distributed appropriately.

To participate: Submit a black and white “ampersand” icon for the benefit font. It should be a vector image file, not a bitmap. Keep it simple, not too crazy. Send it in EPS format to fontaid@typesociety.org by 01/29/10.

More at Typophile, and see the submissions so far.

I have been watching this really strange and sometimes amazing Flickr account by the name of Bustbright. They typically post rare and unknown designs from the past, but also designs by big names like Rand and Beall. Most the posts are very dry, but there are some gems here and there. But even the dry work seems to contain some certain sense of interestingness that continues drawing me back for more.

Our hot font release of 2009, Agostina, recently made an appearance in this years hollywood action film Crank: High Voltage. Used during two different sequences in the film, Agostina puts on its dancing shoes and shines. Much thanks to the designers who used our font for this project, and great execution with the sequences! Thanks to Mark Stuckert for the heads up.

Studio Von Birken updates with some new work and a new site. I am not feeling the new site design too much, but the work is always enjoyed…
