Gavin

For the past five weeks, our in-house designer Jackkrit Anantakul has been sketching, scanning and designing his latest font (handset) design, entitled Gavin. When all was said and done, the concept sketches had over 1100 letter designs, from which we narrowed down two versions, Gavin and Gavin Alt. Each of these two styles contains over 400 diverse, hand-drawn letters. To celebrate Gavin’s release we created a promotional pdf to showcase possible designs using Gavin. Gavin is extremely fun to design with, and we hope you enjoy reading this complimentary pdf as much as we enjoyed designing it.

Need

This calendar design is our most recent collaboration with our friends at Need Supply. For this project we were happy to consult them to use Olivier Gourvat’s Sofia, which turned out really nice. They also worked with illustrator Emerald Grippa for the wonderful front side illustration. Copies can be gotten by stopping by their retail location in Richmond, VA.

I have been following Network Osaka’s work for the past year on Flickr, and the work continues to impress upon each new posting. Their work is very retro, but at the same time a unique and modern twist on type and overall communication. It is designers like this that I would love to see redesign various parts of life (phones, UIs, etc), just to shake things up a bit.

For the past few months we’ve been creating something of a journal meets type catalog in collaboration with recent graduate, Sarah Kissell. We intend to demonstrate how our typefaces can be used in an appropriate context while also providing rich content for our customers, students, and the design community to dive into. Look for the completed, perfect bound copies to be available soon.

11194_9398745_lWe did an Illustration Grant last month at Society6 and this month we did a Typographers grant. A lot of great submissions but we had to pick one.

The winner was Steven Bonner who had a lot of great examples of wordplay on his profile. His work is display in nature covers many styles. It is great to see people have an interest in type these days. You can see his full portfolio here and congratulations Steven.

The runner up was Jehoaddan Strain as we were looking for people who created their own typefaces. Jehoaddan’s website can be found here and also worthy of a bookmark. You will be seeing more of her in the future, I am sure about that!

Quick update on the last winner, Will Bryant. We have been working with him based on the previous grant he won, and he is doing some really amazing work. Will be excited to show everyone when it is finished. Thanks to everyone who entered and thanks to Society6 for producing a site that really helps graphic designers without exploiting them or their work.

picture-1We are proud to be a sponsor of this year’s TypeCon 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia. If you don’t know what TypeCon is, it is the leading conference in America on all that is Type.

On top of being one of the main sponsors, we are also curating a poster exhibit at TypeCon again. We are looking for your best poster work that has excellent usage of Type on it. Last year we had enough room to show all the posters that were submitted and the work was amazing. As a bonus a local gallery took all the posters as part of their permanent collection in Buffalo. The time before they travelled around at ATypeI and some other places.

To clarify some issues: There is no specific size requirement for your posters. You do not have to create the type shown on the poster and anyone can submit. Feel free to pass this information to everyone you know, the more the merrier.

What we need from you:

Two copies of each poster design submitted.
Fill out page 2 of the pdf and print it out twice.
Ship to the address on the pdf by July 3rd.

From the big wigs over at Canada Type we now have their second bundled collection. This set includes 14 different type families and a total 31 different font weights and variations. So go ahead, revive and freshen up your font collection with this super discounted set today! This package saves you over $125! In this sour economy, this might cost a grip up front, but you save so much more in the long run and grand scheme of things. Perfect for any agency or small design shop’s type collection.

Personally, I really like Canada Type and what they are doing. These guys are typeface making machines, just look at how many of their fonts we handle. I really like this work ethic, which is, well WORK!
