RMU Typedesign is the personal label of Ralph Michael Unger, a type designer in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany. Ralph began his career in typography early on after completing an apprenticeship in a small print shop in Thuringia. There, he worked with lead letters, galleys, and composing sticks, solidifying his hands-on experience in the art of typesetting. He would spend years working with Linotype machines before technology evolved and he began working digitally on a Mac.
As he spent quite a bit of time digitizing fonts, it’s little wonder why it eventually became a focal point of his occupation. Ralph established his own studio in the mid-90s, and he freelanced as a type designer for both Profonts and URW++ between 2002 and 2009 before setting up his own foundry, RMU Typedesign, in 2009.
One of Ralph’s latest releases is Tablica, a condensed sans serif revival of Minima, designed by Karl-Heinz Lange and released by Typoart. Minima was originally designed for a phone directory, an application that typically needs to pack as much information into as little space as possible, while still maintaining a high degree of legibility.
Ralph’s updated version, Tablica, recalls the architecture of Minima with a fresh, modern stance. Clarity is never an issue with Tablica, even in small point, making it a fantastic choice for any design project that requires very fine print.
Tablica’s range of weights includes Regular, Italic, and Bold, making it well suited to newspapers, publishing, magazines, advertising, corporate communications, web content, and mobile applications. Its numerals are deliberately monospaced so Tablica works well in presentations or publications that display schedules, calendars, charts, or information tables.
Tablica offers discretionary ligatures, standard ligatures, and fractions for added versatility. Its multilingual support extends to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, Dutch, and Basic Greek for global accessibility.
RMU Typedesign currently offers 97 products through YouWorkForThem, an exceptionally vast anthology of display fonts, sans serifs, serifs, and scripts for a wide variety of design projects.
