Michael Gills designed Avalanche Script after being inspired by examples of Hermann Zapf's calligraphy from his book 'Hermann Zapf and His Design Philosophy'. And to echo Zapf's own philosophy, Gills used his understanding of historical forms to create a fresh, modern interpretation. A sharp, sparkling script with a set of decorative swash capitals and some distinctive characters, Avalanche can be best described as a fusion of copperplate and calligraphy; fine engraved lines predominate, but there are also undertones of a broad pen. Avalanche is intended primarily for headlines where a fresh, modern feel is needed. However, the openess and flow of the lowercase make it equally as suitable for short passages of text such as poetry or advertising copy. When Gills was brush lettering the swash capitals he noticed the tension and movement emerging in the characters. He jotted down words and came up with Avalanche which he felt suited the font perfectly. To add extra variety, there are some lowercase swash characters and ornaments included in the font.
