Cotillion and its Small Caps, Italic, and Italic Small Caps family was designed by Jim Rimmer in 1999. The intent was to produce a look that would be suitable for many types of social print or for use in advertising anything from jewelry to fine automobiles. The typeface's very short x-height and its tall ascenders is reminiscent of a number of typefaces that emerged in the late 1920's period. Many foundries made close copies of Bernhard Modern in a rush to capitalize on the commercial success of that type. In the case of Cotillion, the designer used the unusual dimensions of Bernhard, but did not refer to it in the process of designing this face, intending to make a letter of the same general bearing, but preferring to take an individual approach to the design.
