Originally released in the early-mid 1960s, Filmotype developed and released Royal as one of its earliest Transitional Serif typefaces inspired by lettering used on steam-era passenger train coaches Type design Charles Gibbons inspired by Royal's aesthetic expanded and developed a full range of styles based on exploring a variety of useful width variations While it had been Filmotype's practice to generate width variant typefaces using camera stretching techniques, Charles instead mastered each alphabet at its native width to create exceptional typesetting throughout the family Each weight of the Filmotype Royal family was developed from the original font filmstrips and includes a full international character compliment, automatic fractionals, ordinals, and a host of alternate characters in dynamic OpenType format
