Letterstitch Plain™ is a simulation of embroidered text. DIFFERENT WEIGHTS The different weights provided allow you to simulate different thread thicknesses for use in your designs, while maintaining the stitch spacing. When using these fonts with other Letterstitch™ fonts, it is recommended that you use all the fonts at the same point size so that the thread thicknesses and stitch spacings are maintained, allowing you to maintain a higher degree of realism. MULTIPLE USES The Letterstitch™ Plain fonts were originally designed to be used in conjunction with other Letterstitch™ fonts to simulate different types of embroidered text, but you will also find that this font family is particularly useful for simulating the LED displays commonly found on digital watches, clocks, VCRs and microwaves, etc. HYPHEN and ENDASH LEVELS You will discover that the hyphen and endash are at different stitch levels. The hyphen works best for lowercase (i.e. Small Cap characters) while the endash works best with uppercase hyphenations. BRACKETS and PARENTHESES Because we had to choose whether the brackets and parentheses would either be centered more effectively around the uppercase alphabet or the lowercase alphabet, we selected the lowercase smallcaps. However, because the vertical height of the brackets and parentheses is two stitches more than that of the uppercase characters, you can easily centre them for use with the uppercase letters by doing a baseline shift to bring them up one stitch. The baseline shift will vary depending on the point size that you are setting the type. LOWER X-HEIGHTS and STITCH SPACING The Letterstitch™ Plain fonts have a considerably lower x-height than characters in most font. This was intentional, as this font family is intended to be effective when working in conjunction with our other Letterstitch™ embroidery fonts. For the fonts to work together properly, the widths of the stitches have to be the same to maintain realism. Used with the other Letterstitch™ fonts, these plain versions tend to work best when they appear as smaller text below bolder words set in the display and script companion fonts. These fonts automatically set at a smaller point size, while still maintaining the proper thread widths and stitch spacing. The Small Cap characters in the lowercase character slots also have the same stitch width, which means that they can be used in conjunction with the uppercase characters and can also be used to set a smaller point size uppercase text. COMPANION FACES If you are looking for some companion embroidery style fonts, please check out our Letterstitch Script™ and Letterstitch™ families. FULL CHARACTER SET Each font in the Letterstitch Plain™ family has a full character set of 242 letterforms, with all characters designed in the style of the font.
