Description
With the exception of a very few minor modifications to some of the characters, the characters in the three non-skewed versions of "Romanstone™ were all made from impressions which came from antique Remington typewriter of the designer's mother. With the exception of a very few minor modifications to some of characters, these impressions are all authentic replications of the actions of the Remington typewriter keys.

How was it done? Each character was typed an average of 16 times with varying keystroke intensities and a manual adjustment of the ribbon, filling a page full of the complete set of Remington characters. The full sheet was scanned at high resolution, and then EACH character was manually modified to find the most pleasing character contrast. After all the characters were modified individually, the file was then traced to create eps outlines, and then the three most interesting impressions were chosen for use in the Romanstone™ fonts. These were pasted into Fontographer database files. Although, the more faded impressions could have been separated from the bolder ones, it was decided to mix them all up so that each font sets with a pleasing textural variation.

POINT SIZES
While the companion type family Writing Machine™ is a typewriter font family suitable for typesetting where less character fluctuations are desired, the Romanstone™ family was deliberately created to have great variations in the character weight (simulating varying keystroke pressures and ink ribbon quality). As such, the Romanstone™ fonts are not very suitable for typesetting at smaller point sizes, because the fluctuations become amplified and look rather unpleasant. At any size above 24 point, however, these fonts look marvelous. If you require a typewriter font which sets better at smaller point sizes, you should take a look at the Writing Machine™ family which is also available from the TypeArt Foundry Inc. You can license both families together at a reduced special rate.

MORE ABOUT WEIGHT FLUCTUATIONS
In general, if a particular character is lighter or bolder in the Romanstone™ One font, you will find that the opposite will be true in the Romanstone™ Two version. We could have separated the more faded impressions from the bolder ones, but decided to mix them all up so that each font sets with a natural textural variation. As such, to create a line of text which is all faded or all bold, you may have to mix and match characters from the versions "One" and "Two".

The Romanstone™ Xtra font pretty much sets with bolder characters, as well as numerous letterforms with more peculiar distortions. If you want a line of text which really has those grunge typewriter characteristics, you will probably want to start by setting the text in Romanstone™ Xtra and then changing some of the letters, if necessary.

STYLE LINKS
The Romanstone™ One font is the regular version of the family and the Romanstone™ Two font is linked as the bold. The obliques are linked accordingly, so that you can easily toggle between these versions by using the style settings in your typesetting software. To use the Romanstone™ Xtra fonts, you must select them manually.

FULL CHARACTER SET
Each font in the Romanstone™ family has a full character set of 232+ letterforms, with all characters designed in the style of the font.

The first TypeArt fonts were born into the world in 1992, when founder Lloyd Springer produced the first of his more than 400 type designs while trying to create something more interesting to use in his graphic art and desktop publishing assignments. In 1995, the first website was launched to make these cool and artsy fonts available to enthusiastic customers from all over the world. Since then the library has continued to expand and the TypeArt Foundry Inc. has maintained a presence and respected position in the world of modern typography.
