From its inception, Macondo was designed to offer an original and systematic calligraphic style, adapted to the demands of contemporary digital typography. Its design is inspired by illustrations created for a tarot card game, which in turn pays homage to "One Hundred Years of Solitude," the iconic novel by Gabriel García Márquez, the Colombian Nobel laureate. The earliest sketches of this typeface date back to 1997, with graphic development based on the illustrations by Andrés Marquínez. In 2009, Macondo underwent a major upgrade, refining its forms and expanding its versatility. A complementary version, Macondo Swash Caps, was also introduced, featuring elegant ornamental capitals. Recognized for its originality, Macondo was selected for the 2012 Tipos Latinos Biennial. Now, with its extended version, Macondo Pro, this type family is ready for global commercialization with advanced OpenType capabilities.
