Fanny Coulez and Julien Saurin are graphic designers and typographers from Paris, France. “Fonts have always attracted us,” they said, explaining that while letter drawing began as a hobby of theirs, they pushed onward to become self-taught masters of their craft.
Fanny and Julien feel that the most amazing fonts offer ease-of-use for designers, and can be applied to a wide variety of subjects and designs with pleasing results every time. It’s a delicate balance to achieve, but Fanny and Julien have managed to accomplish exactly that with one of their latest releases, Naïve Sans.
The newest member of the Naïve superfamily, Naïve Sans is an exquisite, hand-drawn type design. “We wanted to create a hand-drawn font that was very usable, with a simple and natural look and feel, like you drew it by yourself,” Fanny and Julien told us. The differing sizes of upstrokes and downstrokes (or the “pleins et déliés” as they say in French), add a touch of classicism and whimsy.
Fanny and Julien found their greatest enjoyment through the process of drawing the letterforms of Naïve Sans, along with generating the final font files. Warmth and playfulness permeate this design, offering a casualness that maintains an atmosphere of elegance in equal measure.
The Shake variations of Naïve Sans offer a lively element of mischief, and they proved to be the biggest challenge during the design process. “It’s not really ‘just’ a shaky positioning of each glyph, but a finely balanced work of size and proportions,” Fanny and Julien explained.
Naïve Sans is quite at home in logos, branding, product packaging, posters, children’s book publishing, greeting cards, invitations, and any design application that needs a touch of handcrafted merriment. “We spent a lot of time making this font simple but finely balanced and easy to use in very different designs and situations,” Fanny and Julien expressed. “We hope that we have made a font on which you can count.”
Naïve Sans is available in five weights that include Light, Medium, Bold, Black, and ExtraBlack with Shake versions for each. Multilingual support extends to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, and Pan African Latin languages for global accessibility.
Fanny and Julien currently offer 14 products in their portfolio and we’re excited to watch for their future additions to YouWorkForThem. “We are working on new script fonts,” they told us. “It’s a category that we haven’t explored yet, and it’s very pleasant.”
