Max Phillips is a man of many talents. A novelist, toy designer, graphic designer, and typographer, Max served as the former creative director at FAO Schwarz, eventually establishing an independent type foundry, Signal, in 2012.
Signal is based in Dublin, focusing on type design, lettering, and branding. With Max’s wealth of experience in the field, Signal has been recognized by a host of organizations, including the International Society of Typographic Designers, the Type Directors Club of New York, Graphis, Communication Arts, and the 100 Archive.
Signal’s most recent release through YouWorkForThem is Pressio, a sans serif that proves it’s pretty hip to be square. The development process for Pressio went rather backwards, beginning with its heaviest weight, Black X Compressed. From there, the lettering was flattened in vertical increments to craft its sibling widths, which were hollowed out to craft the lighter weights.
Pressio is a strong family, offering an array of distinct personalities through its varied weights and widths. The widest members are sharply defined and acutely focused, carrying themselves with intense character and self-assurance. The more condensed members are lean yet powerful, conveying their messages with assertiveness and purpose.
Pressio is comprised of 20 fonts in five weights and four widths, giving graphic designers a lot of flexibility in their work. It’s a perfect choice for any project that needs a strong, contemporary sans serif, including headlines, displays, signage, advertising, product packaging, logos, identity, and branding.
Pressio offers a variety of additional features that include case sensitive forms, denominators, numerators, standard ligatures, ordinals, subscript, superscript, and stylistic alternates for design versatility. Its multilingual support extends to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Catalan, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, and Dutch, supporting more than 130 languages for global accessibility.
