For well over a decade, Zetafonts has been at the forefront of innovative type design. The Florence-based foundry, established by Francesco Canovaro, Debora Manetti, and Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini, releases top-quality type families designed with real-world usage in mind. To that end, their work is fresh, unique, and timeless – qualities that are only further improved upon by each font’s extensive functionality and multilingual support.
When it comes to type design, Zetafonts believes that art must always meet application but it has to adapt to current trends to remain relevant. The foundry regularly collaborates with other graphic designers and typographers to design and release type families that are highly versatile in the graphic design workspace, not to mention uniquely attractive.
One of their most recent releases through YouWorkForThem is Blackest, a “quirky but classical” inverse contrast wedge serif. Designed by Francesco Canovaro and Andrea Tartarelli, Blackest is a playful yet elegant expansion of Blacker, a type design originally created by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini. Like its predecessor, Blackest explores “evil serif” architecture, featuring 1970s-style proportions with high contrast and sharp wedge serif detailing.
The result is a contemporary yet vintage character set that really kicks up some dramatic flair wherever it goes. Just like Blacker, Blackest is offered in six weights that include Light, Regular, Medium, Bold, ExtraBold, and Black. These weights are perfect for design projects of all kinds including displays and signage, magazine and editorial layouts, logos, book covers, titling, posters, product packaging, and flyers.
Blackest Text Regular and Text Bold offer the family’s signature design with less contrast and looser spacing, allowing for easier and more comfortable readability in longer blocks of text, web copy, and other text-heavy applications.
Like most of Zetafonts’ previous work, Blackest provides a host of OpenType features like capitals to small caps, case sensitive forms, fractions, discretionary ligatures, standard ligatures, subscript, superscript, scientific inferiors, tabular figures, oldstyle figures, slashed zero, small caps, and stylistic alternates for incredible versatility. Blackest features and extended character set that covers more than 220 languages, extending support for Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Catalan, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, Dutch, Afrikaans, Igbo Onwu, and Basic Cyrillic for design projects aimed at a global audience.
