Ndiscovered is a type foundry and studio based in Lisbon. Established by Natanael Gama, Ndiscovered offers a variety of serif, sans serif, script, and display typefaces to suit design projects of all kinds.
Natanael found his way to the field of typography while working on his university studies for graphic and multimedia design. Part of that coursework involved typography classes, where he began work on what would be his very first font, Exo. That project was a successful one, eventually becoming part of the Google Fonts library.
From that moment on, Natanael has nurtured his passion for type design. Over the years that have passed since graduating from university in 2009, he’s continued to expand his own type library while also working on commissioned projects for notable international companies that include HBO, Lego, Netflix, BBC, and Fifa, to name a few.
When Natanael isn’t working on fonts, he teaches typography to others who are eager to learn the craft.
One of Natanael’s most recent releases through Ndiscovered is Mastro, a contemporary serif counterpart to its predecessor, Mastro Sans.
Mastro is “filled with iconic unusual shapes,” Natanael said. The highly-versatile font family features a visually-striking architecture that balances elegance and modern sophistication with a professional demeanor.
Mastro is a stellar serif design with four distinct styles that vary in contrast to accommodate a range of design projects. Caption, for instance, was optimized for use in footnotes, featuring a low-contrast structure, looser spacing, bulkier serifs, high x-height, and larger apertures.
Mastro’s Text style is optimized for long-form text use. It features medium contrast, regular spacing and x-height, regular width, and normal serifs.
Sub-Head style is optimized for subheadings and smaller headlines, offering high characters with high contrast, bigger terminals, and slimmer serifs.
Mastro’s Display style was built for larger displays and any project that incorporates large-size typesetting. Of the entire family, Display’s characters carry the tightest spacing with extreme contrast, huge terminals, and a slightly condensed form.
The entire Mastro family is available in Extra Light, Light, Book, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold, Bold, Extra Bold, and Black, with corresponding italics for each. With 72 unique fonts on hand, Mastro is beautifully suited to everything from headlines and editorials to body copy, digital and print publishing applications, corporate communications, white papers, infographics, logos, letterhead, product packaging, merchandise, apparel, book covers, album artwork, and marketing materials. It’s a great choice for branding and identity projects that require design cohesion across multiple media types and sizes.
Mastro offers a number of additional features through OpenType, including capitals to small caps, case-sensitive forms, discretionary ligatures, standard ligatures, fractions, localized forms, ordinals, lining figures, tabular figures, oldstyle figures, subscript, superscript, scientific inferiors, and small caps for incredible flexibility. This workhorse type family extends multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Catalan, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, Dutch, Igbo Onwu, and Basic Greek for design projects intended for a global audience.
