Seven-Layered Sevastian Celebrates Three-Dimensional Vintage Typography - 1

Adam Fathony is a designer who specializes in logo design, front end design, and typography. Earning a degree from Universitas Komputer Indonesia (UNIKOM), he went on to establish AF Studio, his own foundry in Bandung, Indonesia. Freelancing has allowed this designer to deepen his self-education in type design, while also giving him ample opportunity to revel in the process of creation.

Adam is known for his intricate, handwritten brush scripts and midcentury-inspired display fonts, often sharing his projects on Instagram. He’s particularly fascinated by the artistry and skill of masterful sign painters from decades past, creating beautiful handprinted works of art in spite of having a limited set of tools at their disposal.

Adam’s love for vintage design elements is displayed fully in one of his latest releases, Sevastian. His goal was to digitally recreate the same type of three-dimensional effect that was painstakingly crafted by midcentury painters, and to build an entire type system around that theme.

With Sevastian, designers don’t need to add their own effects because the layered nature of this type design already does it for them. Comprised of seven all caps/small caps sans serif lettersets, Sevastian offers a lot of flexibility for building depth in its letterforms.

Sevastian Base features the basic structure of the font and may be used alone or in conjunction with any (or all) of its siblings. Inner offers a delicate inner line, accentuated by small, diamond-shape spots in key areas of each letter’s architecture. Hatch provides a layer of horizontal surface hatch, while Build adds a raised layer of text. Extrude, Dark Extrude, and 3D Shadow all give designers more options for greater intricacy and weight. Each letter set within Sevastian is numbered from 01 to 07 to make it easier to remember the layering system while working with it: 01 Inner is the topmost layer, while 07 3D Shadow is the bottom layer.

Experimentation is the name of the game with Sevastian – all of its pieces can be mixed and matched to create an entirely unique series of letters in bold displays and signage, product packaging, merchandise, apparel, advertising, logos, and branding. Multilingual support extends to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, and Pan African Latin for exceptional global accessibility.
