Sam Parrett is a typographer and graphic designer who’s really built a name for himself here at YouWorkForThem. For the last few years, his designs have continued to find themselves among our top ten fonts of the year, which is a testament to how popular his work really is. As the owner of Set Sail Studios, his work has consistently received accolades from graphic designers around the world and it’s a trend that shows no sign of stopping.
Before Sam established Set Sail studios, he worked for a number of years doing graphic design work in the music industry. Looking at his body of work these days, that career left a deep mark on his personal style and preference for handwritten type designs.
At one point, one of his hand-drawn concepts served as the inspiration for a new font idea. While the logo concept didn’t go anywhere with the client, Sam thought that the lettering held a degree of promise. “I thought it’d be fun to turn it into a font just to try and learn a new skill,” he said. “I didn’t expect anything to come of it but I was fascinated by the process and was totally blown away by the response to my first release.” That response, along with the joy he found creating type designs, kept Sam moving forward in an entirely new career direction.

You can use the alternate characters to mix letter styles together, creating a little more variation in the handwriting. This is especially useful when you’ve got two of the same characters appearing beside one another in a word, because subtle letter variations will make the writing look a little more naturally handwritten.
