Jim LePage is an independent abstract artist and the founder of Chroma Supply, a studio that creates and distributes abstract design resources and artwork. Chroma Supply features much of Jim’s own design work, but the studio also collaborates with other abstract artists to craft new products for their growing portfolio of artwork.
While Jim enjoys his work as an abstract artist, the path he took to reach his current career was a long and winding one. He recalled how, as a child, he was never really into artwork all that much. “I was not that kid who was always drawing,” he said. “Other than playing in a couple bands, I didn’t have much experience creating art.”
Before getting into graphic design and eventually abstract art, Jim worked as a preschool teacher for a number of years. In 2003, however, he needed a change of scenery and a new career direction. For someone who never took much of an interest in art, even as a hobby, graphic design might not have seemed like the next logical step but it’s what Jim chose to pursue. He enrolled in a graphic design program at the local college and it ended up being something he had a hidden talent for. On top of that, he actually enjoyed it.
Over the years that followed, Jim worked in graphic design until he started experimenting with abstract art in 2012. Until that point, his projects completely revolved around his clients’ needs, but abstract art provided Jim with an outlet where he could get creative and do whatever he wanted to – without answering to anyone. Embracing his creative passion in such a way turned out to be a freeing experience, to say the least. His clients took notice, as well. Jim still finds it especially rewarding when a graphic design client comes to him and requests a design that’s based on his abstract artwork.
A couple of Jim’s paintings were featured in the album artwork and promotional materials for Feist’s album, Pleasure, including print ads and billboards that were displayed in Chicago and Los Angeles. “I’m a huge fan of hers and have really been wanting to get more into the world of album art, so it was pretty amazing to see that all come together,” he told us of the project. He hopes to do more work with the music industry in the future and we have no doubt that he will.
One of his more recent releases through Chroma Supply is Displaced: 80 Isolated Abstract 3D Textures. A hallmark of Jim’s work is his texture and color, and Displaced is no exception.
The vivid, three-dimensional shapes in Displaced each have transparent backgrounds so designers can apply them anywhere. Through adjustment layers in Photoshop, designers can customize the color balance, hue and saturation, or invert them entirely to create completely unique and endless variations. Each image in Displaced: 80 Isolated Abstract 3D Textures is high resolution at 20″x20″, 300 dpi, so they work beautifully in both print and web applications at outputs of all sizes.
Displaced: 80 Isolated Abstract 3D Textures includes 20 distinct abstract designs with two color variations for each. Those same 20 abstract designs also come in two black and white variations. If that isn’t enough, the collection includes an .abr Photoshop brush set so designers can create their own textured backgrounds with custom colors and gradients.
Displaced: 80 Isolated Abstract 3D Textures is perfect for digital art prints, digital collages, album artwork, book covers, backgrounds, wallpapers, website designs, posters, packaging, stationery, presentations, and any project that needs bold, three-dimensional texture and color.
Chroma Supply currently offers more than 85 products through YouWorkForThem, featuring a load of beautiful abstract textures, shapes, and colorful acrylic-like paintings to suit a variety of design projects.
