A Script and Serif Family from Emil Bertell: Bolton - 1

Emil Bertell is a Finnish graphic designer, typographer, and skilled illustrator who’s earned a stellar reputation for his design work. Art has always been an essential part of his life, even before he was able to read as a child. His very first exploration into the field of graphic design came during his high school years, an era that also inspired young Emil to teach himself the basic principles of typography.

His exposure to multimedia courses is what enabled him to study type design as a teenager, helping him to craft and release his very first font at 16 years old. A year later, his work was published in the font anthology, “FreeFonts!: Designer Fonts Online,” an accomplishment that few achieve while still in high school.

Studying typography and design on his own and at school is what eventually drove Emil to pursue typography as a full-time career when he reached adulthood. He has a thorough understanding of the bones of solid design, and he strives to provide graphic designers with fonts that will meet their varied needs through the inclusion of OpenType features and extensive multilingual support. He’s also enjoyed a great deal of success since his career began. Lakmus, one of Emil’s type designs, was licensed for the logo for the Disney Channel teen sitcom, “Shake It Up.”

Emil’s personal foundry label, Fenotype, provides a series of strong and functional type designs for graphic designers around the world. While typography is his full-time career, Emil absolutely loves what he does, an enthusiasm that can be felt through every one of his type designs.

One of his more recent releases on YouWorkForThem is Bolton, a superfamily of serif and script fonts designed with geometric shapes in mind. It was an ambitious design project, to be sure, given the scope of the entire family.

Bolton Script is a bubbly, connective cursive script written with a feminine flair. It’s warm, familiar, and inviting, like the label on your favorite summertime brew. Bolton Script is available in Regular, Bold, and Black, giving designers more options to work with.

Bolton Serif is a masculine all-caps serif letter set with a broad stance and a confident posture, the perfect accompaniment to Bolton Script. Where Bolton Script is soft and luscious, Bolton Serif is a little more hard-edged and rugged. Like its feminine sibling, Bolton Serif is also available in Regular, Bold and Black.

Both Bolton Serif and Script are available in a smooth regular version as well as a weathered and distressed version, Print. Bolton Print is reminiscent of letterpress lettering from decades ago, worn down with time but still sharing its message with the world. The Print variations of Bolton are ideal for crafting vintage-inspired designs, particularly on wine or spirit labels and organic food packaging.

Because Emil is all about versatility, Bolton also includes Extras, a series of 58 banners, lines, swash, and catchwords for adding the perfect finishing touches to your designs. Like Script and Serif, Bolton Extras are also available in the weathered Print version.

Bolton is a great choice for crafting unique headlines and logotypes. The range of styles makes it beautifully suited to branding and identity projects, as well. Bolton is perfect for display projects of all kinds, including signage, product packaging, apparel, merchandise, posters, flyers, and website designs.
