Based in Geneva, Switzerland, Michael Parson is the graphic designer and typographer who established Typogama Digital Type Foundry. While he was studying at Ecal University, one of his professors introduced him to Fontographer, which was the only digital font software available at the time.
It changed everything. “I was amazed at the technology behind typeface design and how this little program could then command the various letterforms I had created,” Michael said. “I got more involved in type design the following years and explored typography as code during my final graphic design course.”
Eventually, he had some type design work under his belt and he sought to find a way to get it out in front of the public. He did what any type designer at the time would have done and just started contacting foundries to gauge their interest. “Linotype accepted my fonts as part of the TakeType contest,” Michael said. “This was huge for me and in my mind, a small encouragement that maybe there was something more for me to explore in type design.”
That was all it took to inspire Michael to keep moving forward in the type design industry. Eventually, his passion for type design surpassed that of graphic design entirely because “there are so many different ideas to explore and discover, it is never ending!”
To be that passionate about one’s work is an incredible gift and it’s one that Michael is not wasting. He continually explores type design with each new letter set he creates, always seeking to provide visual solutions for graphic designers around the world.
“A font is a solution to a given need,” Michael told us. “If your choice suits that need, then it is an amazing font.”
Having worked as a graphic designer himself, he understands the needs of graphic designers and strives to provide them with unique and versatile type designs for projects of all kinds. One of his most recent releases is Ahsing, a single-weight display typeface that was “inspired by a wide range of sources and styles.”
