W Type Foundry originally started off under the name, Without Foundry, when it was first established by Felipe Sanzana and Diego Aravena Silo in 2012. The two men met while they were both involved in a lettering and typography degree program at the University of Chile. They took their ideas and fondness for designing letters and built a digital type foundry that is still going strong nearly a decade later.
Operated by Diego Aravena Silo, Patricio Truenos, Magdalena (Bana) Arasanz, and David Súid, the W Type Foundry’s work largely focuses on contemporary design aesthetics that offer a high degree of flexibility through OpenType and the inclusion of extensive multilingual support that satisfies a global design marketplace.
Well versed in every aspect of typography and its applications in graphic design, advertising, identity, branding, and art direction, the foundry has incredibly well-rounded experience in its craft.
One of their most recent releases through YouWorkForThem is Cannon, “the result of combining the clean aesthetics from a classic sans Neo-grotesque with a touch of geometric design.”
Designed by Patricio Truenos, Cannon is a contemporary sans serif that is simple on the surface but surprisingly dynamic, with a tenor that is both retro and technological at the exact same time. For this reason, the type family is equally adaptable to design projects that are fresh and modern or that have a touch of vintage character.
Cannon is sophisticated and clean, providing fantastic legibility and conveying every message with confidence and a neutral tone. While it offers a complete set of upper and lowercase characters through the first half of the family, the second half is comprised of small caps character sets – making this type design extremely versatile.
Cannon and Cannon SC are available in Thin, ExtraLight, Light, Book, Regular, Medium, Bold, ExtraBold, and Black, with corresponding italics for each. It’s beautifully suited to everything from displays and signage to advertising, headlines, editorials, website designs and copy, logos, product packaging, merchandise, apparel, publishing, marketing materials, labels, tags, mobile apps, and more. Cannon is fantastic for branding and identity projects that require fluid design cohesion across multiple media applications.
Cannon offers additional versatility through OpenType, providing fractions, standard ligatures, ordinals, superscript, and stylistic alternates for greater flexibility. It extends multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, and Pan African Latin languages for designs intended for an international audience.
W Type Foundry currently offers 31 products through YouWorkForThem, providing a wide range of contemporary typefaces for design projects of all kinds. Visit their portfolio to take a look at the rest of their work and bookmark it so you can check back for new releases in the future!
