Based in the UK, Sam Parrett is the designer and typographer behind Set Sail Studios, a type foundry and online store that specializes in handcrafted lettering that conveys every message with passion and enthusiasm.
Sam told us that he had always had an interest in graphic design, even though he really didn’t have much in the way of drawing or painting skills in his younger days. He started out as a beginner with Photoshop while was a guitarist in a local band, creating flyers and marketing materials for their own promotional use.
Eventually, Sam made his way into the graphic design industry as a professional and freelancer around 2010, working largely for the music industry — a place where passion and artistry reign. After one of his logo concepts was rejected by a client, he decided to explore the lettering he used in greater detail, fleshing it out into an entire character set — and what would become his very first type design.
His career has continued to flourish ever since. Set Sail Studios has grown in popularity over the years and it’s now known for being one of the most reputable sources for realistic brush fonts. Sam’s typography has made it into our Top Ten Fonts of the Year listings multiple years in a row and he never ceases to amaze us with his work.
The realism he achieves is often made possible through his creative exploration of real source materials that include ink, paint, paper, and brushes to create drawings that are later scanned and vectorized, although some of his work is fully crafted digitally. While his precise methods are dependent upon the font he’s creating, his type designs are always handcrafted with care and attention to detail.
