Based in Indonesia, Wisnu Cipto Wibowo is a talented illustrator and typographer who revels in the artistic freedom offered by his chosen profession. His favorite part of the process is the gathering of ideas and watching them materialize before his eyes as he designs them.
Taking all of his “wild ideas” and turning them into fonts is an exciting endeavor because the creative possibilities and potential are essentially limited only by his imagination. Beyond designing expressive character sets, Wisnu really enjoys watching his work come alive in others’ design projects; seeing how people use his type designs and knowing that his work plays an integral role in their successes is an invaluable reward.
We spoke with Wisnu when we featured his design, Qirate Mono, on the YouWorkForThem blog last month. At the time, he hinted that his next release was being crafted with a Spanish theme in mind.
That new release turned out to be El Grosa, an all-caps type family imbued with the spirit of Spain. Inspired by traditional Spanish culture, El Grosa offers three distinctive character sets that work beautifully together or on their own.
El Grosa Display is the heavy-hitter of the family, featuring square corners and high contrast lettering that stands with a dramatically wide posture. This font conveys strength and confidence, making a powerful and bold statement in posters, titling, displays, signage, logos, product packaging, book covers, album artwork, and marketing materials.
El Grosa West is perhaps the most traditional character set. Reminiscent of old-style carnival signage, El Grosa West carries a heavy “wild west” atmosphere throughout its decorative architecture. While it’s a classic design style with a decidedly vintage spin, this character set will work equally well in contemporary design settings. It’s a fantastic choice for bold signage and displays, logo designs, product packaging, merchandise, apparel, publishing, marketing materials, and any project that needs a classic western font at the helm.
Rounding out the family — quite literally — is El Grosa Rounded, the softest and most minimal type design of the trio. El Grosa Rounded features rounded corners and speaks with perfect clarity, working well in combination with Display and West or entirely on its own. This character set is perfectly suited for advertising, product packaging, logo design, headlines and subheadings, merchandise, apparel, website designs, mobile applications, and even social media imagery.
The El Grosa family extends multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, and Pan African Latin languages for design projects intended for an international audience.
In addition to three unique letter sets, El Grosa also includes a bonus vector illustration that relays the story of Spanish culture. Featuring a series of badges and sticker-like illustrations, designers are treated to an assortment of illustrations that celebrate the rich and varied culture of Spain.
