About Laura Worthington: An accomplished and award-winning typeface and lettering designer, my passion for the craft, devotion to precision as I refine my creations along with my desire to provide designers with type that’s rich with personality and versatility combine to form a body of work that offers practicality and aesthetic appeal. Each project is a journey that I undertake with enthusiasm and joyful discovery and gratitude that my background in graphic design, calligraphy and typography have given me the opportunity to focus on what I love to do most. My approach is unusual in that everything from original concept and drawings through production is mine. Rather than collaborate or look to historical predecessors, I craft original, lovingly handmade letters which form the base of my typeface designs. I offer designs that are infused with both personality and the sense of a milieu or era, a moment captured from time or place and then transformed. Yet, rich as they are, I nearly always provide the tools to make the typeface package expansive with an extraordinary number of alternates, ornaments and other Open Type features that a designer can, in effect, combine to make the typeface reflect their own personal style. My home is in the Pacific Northwest. Nothing makes me happier in my professional life than spending my workday experimenting, conceiving, and painstakingly creating hand lettering for typefaces, sitting, dogs at my feet, surrounded by the trees.
I love big, round, fancy letters – a beautiful flourishing script. But what I love even more in a script typeface, is a design that is distinctly different. A glimmer of the exotic, a touch of the unusual. Azalea is just that, and it possesses the ability to work in many design situations.Azalea comes in two varieties. The clean lines of Azalea Smooth accentuate it’s jaunty, angular letterforms, giving it a modern look. Azalea Rough has a rustic, organic feel with a distinct irregularity to the letters that provide it with a unique appearance. Azalea Rough features an alternate set of capital letters that are a bit more casual than the standard set.

Several years ago, I was asked to design a brochure for a native plant habitat garden. I drew some scenic backgrounds with charcoal, used pen and ink to stipple detailed scientific drawings of the plants to be showcased in the garden, and brush lettered on watercolor paper the headlines for each section of the brochure.

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with patterns. Growing up in a home built in the 1920s that had very interesting wallpaper throughout can have that effect. These icons and tiles are a result of several sketches accumulated in my many notebooks, finally redrawn and assembled into an easy to use font format. Creation of this typeface for titling, display, and logos was inspired by my exploration and drawing of forms found in nature. Refined, quiet and elegant, yet quirky enough to employ slim filaments that somehow are not faint of heart, Mandevilla is named for the verdant tropical vine. The sturdy plant has firm footing in the soil, then climbs, curving around trees, stretching toward the light, bridging earth and sky. Mandevilla began as a sans-serif, but its footing, in the form of tiny round lachrymal terminals, roots it and transforms it into a semi-serif. From there the tendrils spiral—especially in the uppercase letters, with their echoes of nautilus shells we held to our ears to hear the ocean—and embrace slender, airy ascenders that tenderly but determinedly rise heavenward…
Tiva gives the impression of handwriting with the refinement of hand lettering. To achieve this effect, I kept in some of the quirks and the naturally occurring variations in writing such as letters that drop slightly below the baseline and some above. I added in several automatic letter combinations, with particular attention to double letter pairs (such as ‘oo’ or ‘ee’), to further accentuate the organic effect of handwriting. 60 alternate letters are included in this typeface, allowing the designer even more creative possibilities.
A hand drawn, casual typeface well suited for headlines, packaging and for anything that calls for the look and feel of handwriting. Honey Bee features 90 alternate characters which include a set of uppercase and lowercase letters with standard serifs. 20 ornaments are included as well to complement the unique qualities of this design.
This design took me on a voyage across continents and cultures, its look taking shape in many forms. Western, tropical, and vintage old-world with a modern touch, Nelson is perfectly suited for headlines and logos, packaging and advertising. Featuring four sizes of capital letters – large, standard, petite and small, over 150 alternates and swashes and two sets of decorated initials (Nelson Rugged & Bold) – this titling font makes crafting a headline or logo a fun and interesting pursuit.
Samantha was designed with a focus on variety, versatility, beauty and practicality. With measured rhythm and contrasting, connected strokes, Samantha possesses a flowingly smooth elegance with the ability to take on many appearances, from simple styling to the fanciest of all flourishes with its 2700+ glyphs that take advantage of OpenType. Over 1100 alternate and swash letters feature ascenders and descenders that vary in length and complexity. Standard ligatures ensure that this font looks as perfect as possible and 20 discretionary ligatures enliven its style. Numerals are offered in their standard form, as well as an old style and a swash set too. The addition of 60 ornaments and 45 catchwords offer even more design possibilities.
Alana Pro is a natural looking, semi-connected script face. Based on hand lettering, friendly and unique with its ability to transition from casual to formal, it holds its original hand drawn, slightly rough look and feel. It features 341 alternates which include two additional uppercase letter sets and hundreds of alternate lowercase letters, making it very versatile.
Sepian is an original hand lettered font based primarily on Textualis, or Textura in the Blackletter family – the style most commonly associated with Gothic scripts. The addition of barbs to the terminals add to its modern and sharp look and feel. Sepian is perfect for anything in need of a wicked, gothic and medieval look. Use it for tattoos, a headline for a poster, a sinister tale and more.
Recherche, a unique hand lettered font, began with hundreds of sheets of paper filled with letters rendered with a pointed brush. During the process of refining the font, I realized that it had the potential to be very versatile, transitioning from casual to elegant with the use of over 100 alternate swash letters which include a set of formal capital letters. It is a very fun font to design with as there are so many options (11 different versions of the letter ‘h’ for example), yet even with the flourishing, it still remains a legible script.The word Recherche is of French origin, meaning “sought out with care, of studied refinement or elegance.” It is a word that my friend, Annette, had told me about years ago, when we were in design class together, remarking about how she liked its meaning and sound. This font is dedicated to her.Recherche is well suited for invitations, headlines or a letter to a friend.
Origins is a calligraphic font with an antique look and feel, complete with 140 alternate characters and ornaments. This type design was hand lettered with a Crow Quill pen on parchment paper, providing it with its natural, rough appearance. Origins features gracious ascenders and descenders for an elegant, handwritten look. Well suited for headlines, titling, weddings, advertisements and more, Origins has a realistic and custom lettered appearance – especially when combined with its many alternates.
