This anxiety-inducing photograph by Maria Jauregui Ponte illustrates one of the most common childhood fears known to man. You’ve just been tucked “safely” into bed. Mommy leaves your bedroom door cracked after she leaves and everything is fine for about two minutes. In no time at all, the night’s shadows begin to stretch themselves, unfurling like monsters after a long sleep. You lie there helplessly as they stand between you and your parents, who are just down the hall and oblivious to your plight. The grainy film effect in this photograph creates an additional element of uncertainty, and the black-and-orange color scheme is happenstance. This image has a lot of great Photoshop potential for Halloween-themed artwork: the addition of spider shadows, a gnarled monster claw poking its way through the crack in the doorway, or even a pool of blood on the floor.
