Based in São Paulo, Brazil, Studio Papanapa is a multidisciplinary design studio and type foundry that strives to create “aesthetically attractive experiences” for its clients. Beyond type design, Studio Papanapa works on print design, animation, visual identities and branding, video mappings, illustration, mobile design, packaging design, and more. The studio works with teams of artistic collaborators that include photographers, copywriters, and musicians to bring a cohesive and multi-talented approach to every project.
Studio Papanapa was founded by Gustavo Garcia, a talented graphic designer who received his master’s degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York. With experience in art direction, branding and identity, corporate identity, graphic design, and logo design, he has been at the studio’s helm since it was established in 2011.
Studio Papanapa’s primary goal is to enable its clients to express themselves visually, and their very first foray into type design is sure to do exactly that!
The very first type design released by Studio Papanapa is Tocco, a high contrast variable font available in eight weights. This type design was actually inspired by chunks of wood that were found in a workshop the studio conducted with one of its clients. The idea translated into a type design with blocky, wedge-style cutouts that instantly grab the viewer’s attention.
Tocco is bold and expressive, carrying itself with contemporary elegance and grace. This stylish serif design features angular curves and sharp serifs, conveying every message with confidence. Its lighter weights are well suited to small blocks of text, graduating to headlines and strong displays as it progresses toward its heavier weights.
This variable font provides designers with a lot of flexibility in their design space. Tocco is available in Thin, UltraLight, Light, Regular, SemiBold, Bold, UltraBold, and Black for those who use a design program that doesn’t yet support variable fonts.
Tocco provides standard ligatures and extends multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, and Pan African Latin languages for global accessibility.
