The Background on Refrigerator Deluxe
Simonson started developing this font in 1988 as one of his earliest PostScript typefaces. While inspired by lettering manuals as mentioned above, his other inspirations come directly from sans-serifs. His early prototype was a blocky version of this font with rigid, geometric forms.
At first, Mark called his creation simply “Mechanik” to help differentiate it from similar fonts on the market. He temporarily abandoned his creation when a font with similar qualities became popular. It wasn’t until well into the 2000s when he returned to his idea and developed it further.
