Refrigerator Deluxe Fonts: A Popular Retro Style That Works in Multiple Formats - 1

Refrigerator Deluxe is a very popular font that brings back a particular retro style seen in the mid-20th century. Its inspiration comes from block-style lettering commonly seen in lettering manuals during the era. Created by font designer extraordinaire Mark Simonson, this font is a versatile workhorse, especially with the recent resurgence of retro styles.

Simonson’s creation sprung out of his fascination with all fonts from past eras. Refrigerator Deluxe more or less came from his memory and media font assimilation. You can brand him rare in that department since most kids of his era didn’t typically have the same interest.

Some of his inspirations came from 1960s-era Kenner building sets, Mad Magazine’s font styles, and his own doodles. He also drew cartoons and unique lettering, which seems to spring from his own family having engineering and graphic design careers.

Working as a magazine and package designer as an adult, Mark didn’t get into creating fonts until well into middle age. Nevertheless, what he’s created has already endured.

Let’s look at his classic Refrigerator Deluxe font in more detail and how you can acquire it here at YouWorkForThem.

The Background on Refrigerator Deluxe

Simonson started developing this font in 1988 as one of his earliest PostScript typefaces. While inspired by lettering manuals as mentioned above, his other inspirations come directly from sans-serifs. His early prototype was a blocky version of this font with rigid, geometric forms.

At first, Mark called his creation simply “Mechanik” to help differentiate it from similar fonts on the market. He temporarily abandoned his creation when a font with similar qualities became popular. It wasn’t until well into the 2000s when he returned to his idea and developed it further.

Then it became simply known as Refrigerator with two light and heavy weight variations. In 2008, Mark finally perfected Refrigerator Deluxe, with the addition of numerous alternative characters. All these variations are usable in different media formats to give you various unique font appearances. Some of these options include open, stylized shapes that give you an Art Deco feel.

The Character Set

With the characteristics of each font coming in light, heavy, bold, and regular, the character sets are quite comprehensive. You have Latin capitals, lowercase, ligatures, proportional figures, fractions, currency characters, and punctuation.

Simonson gives some examples of how these look in various formats along with directions on ways to use them. When you’re working with Adobe CC applications, you get access to various OpenType features like extended stylistic sets and alternates.
