An Elegant Art Nouveau Type Design From Louise Fili: Montecatini - 1

Louise Fili has led an incredibly prolific career as a graphic designer and typographer. The director of Louise Fili Ltd in New York City, Louise worked as an art director for Pantheon Books for more than a decade, designing more than 2,000 book covers during that time. She has co-authored more than 25 books on design and typography, received three James Beard award nominations, and her work is among the permanent collections of the Library of Congress. Louise has also received a Lifetime Achievement medal from the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Type Directors Club.

Louise established Louise Fili Ltd back in 1989, building a graphic design studio whose focus is centered around branding for restaurants and food packaging. Louise is very particular when it comes to the fonts she creates; a project has to be able to hold her interest for a couple of months, something she notes is a tall order. Her very first digital type design, Mardell, was released in 2016, followed by her most recent release on YouWorkForThem, Montecatini.

Montecatini is an absolutely gorgeous art nouveau letter set inspired by Italian travel posters from the early 20th century and named after a favorite spa town in Tuscany. Louise observed that her design process for crafting an entire font differs greatly from a hand lettering project, in that she has to consider the way the letters will work with each other instead of merely among themselves.

With Montecatini, Louise wanted to have an authentic feeling of a hand lettered poster from the early 1900s and she captured that essence flawlessly. This type design is an elegant digital rendition of a classic and beloved style, presenting itself with sophistication and a touch of old world romance. It’s luxurious without being pretentious; it is, quite simply, a beautiful interpretation of classic art nouveau for contemporary design projects.

This graceful display font is well suited to invitations, event programs, book covers, posters, advertising, product packaging, monograms, menus, logos, and branding projects.

Montecatini offers an impressive range of standard and discretionary ligatures – more than 200, in fact. Its multilingual support extends to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Baltic, Central European, and Pan African Latin languages for global accessibility.
