Based in Jakarta, Indonesia, Iqbal Firdaus is a graphic and type designer with a background in branding. He studied his craft at the Jakarta Institute of Arts and after working in the field of graphic design, he chose to become a full-time type designer and established his own foundry label, Tegami Type, in 2017.

Iqbal’s work prizes clarity and minimalism, focusing on styles that offer plenty of design versatility and multilingual support. One of his most recent releases is TG Praktikal, a contemporary geometric sans serif in eight styles and one variable font.

TG Praktikal was inspired by classic geometric and Gothic typefaces, including Bell Centinel, Whitney, and Metric. Iqbal added a touch of a monospace aesthetic to create a unique character set that works beautifully for display and body text applications.

TG Praktikal is, as its name suggests, a practical and no-nonsense type design that speaks with clarity and offers fantastic legibility — even in small point. This type family’s tone remains neutral, yet it doesn’t come across as cold and unfeeling. It is simply matter-of-fact, conveying every message without pretense.

TG Praktikal is available in Thin, Ultra Light, Light, Regular, Medium, Bold, ExtraBold, and Black, making it well suited to everything from bold displays and signage to headlines, subheadings, body text, website designs, mobile applications, print and digital publishing, product packaging and informational inserts, merchandise, apparel, logos, letterhead, corporate communications, white papers, infographics, presentations, labels, tags, and business cards. It’s a great choice for branding and identity projects that require fluid design cohesion across multiple media types.

For those working with graphic applications that support variable fonts, TG Praktikal Variable enables designers to fine-tune the appearance of this type family to absolute perfection in their workflows.

TG Praktikal offers additional features through OpenType, including standard and discretionary ligatures, fractions, localized forms, ordinals, subscript, superscript, scientific inferiors, and stylistic alternates for better flexibility. It extends multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, and Pan African Latin languages for international accessibility.

Tegami Type currently offers five products through YouWorkForThem and we’re looking forward to seeing more of their work in the future. So far, they gravitate toward clean and contemporary serifs and sans serifs.
